Public Talk: Truth to power in the arts

On 31 May, Kunstenpunt is organising a public conversation about the power of expression and action in the arts world on socio-political topics, as part of Kunstenfestivaldesarts. Who addresses these topics and how? Are there limits to our freedom of speech, and if so, what are they? And if not, what do we need to do to make sure it stays that way?

Artists are in touch with the world around them. Sometimes they take explicit positions, other times they add nuance. Their political and societal points of view may at times clash with political visions and economic interests. Many colleagues in the arts world feel that they have a responsibility in this area. Art has expressive power and can reach a wide audience.

In the past years we have seen across Europe, and at times in Flanders too, that the freedom of speech of artists and arts organisations is under pressure. And even though that pressure has no legal grounds, it can have an impact. Occasionally artists’ funding is questioned or opportunities for presentation are blocked.

Mary Ann de Vlieg moderates a conversation featuring Tom Bonte (Ancienne Belgique), Kasia Redzisz (Kanal), Maria Dogahe (Kaaitheater, Caddy) and Bill Dietz (Overtoon). Yazan Khalili opens the evening with a keynote.
