Focus Claus 2017-18
It is already ten years since one of the leading, if not the single most important, post-war Belgian authors, died. On 19 March 2008, Hugo Claus, who had long suffered from Alzheimer's disease, opted for euthanasia. Precisely ten years after his death, we pay tribute with two productions.
The Swiss director Christophe Sermet, who was acclaimed for his version of Tom Lanoye’s Mamma Medea, stages a relatively unknown novella Claus wrote at the end of his life, Het laatste bed. In it, two lovers who want to end their lives play a central role.
Apart from this, the KVS has unearthed Het leven en de werken van Leopold II from its own back catalogue. 15 years ago Raven Ruëll directed a bunch of young and hungry stage animals. Apart from Ruell’s long-term associate Bruno Vanden Broecke, the cast includes actors such as Geert Van Rampelberg, François Beukelaers and Koen De Graeve. In honour of the master, who actually came to admire this creation in the Bottelarij, audiences will have the chance to see the performance for the last time. Three performances will be staged in Brussels. So hurry if you still want to get a ticket.
