Het Leven en de werken van Leopold II

Raven Ruëll & Hugo Claus / KVS

This production about Belgium’s colonial past first appeared on the agenda in 2003, was selected that same season for the Theatre Festival, went on tour in Kinshasa in 2007, played at parish halls in Flanders and Wallonia and then finally came home again to Molière, a small theatre in the Matongé district of Brussels.

The big challenge of performing this forgotten play by Hugo Claus was in the apparent contradiction between the historic facts and the theatrical exuberance. Director Raven Ruëll threw off the historic yoke and searched for ‘the man’ Leopold II. Eventually he found a combination of his personal and political side in a performance that still turns out to be a fantastic party years after its creation.
