The programme for Saint Amour 2018 will be as many-voiced, sensitive and hot-blooded as our insane times and mores, but will very probably be somewhat more eloquent.
Following last year, when the focus was on a single writer, Herman Brusselmans, this time Saint Amour will be appearing with a full cast. Despite the divorce called Brexit, the United Kingdom still has a number of eminent writers who have not abandoned their love and are retracing their steps specially for Saint Amour, such as Michael Faber and David Szalay. In addition, Sien Volders represents the young people making their debut who have declared the hunt for untamed life to be on. Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer also joins us, probably still catching his breath from the festivities for his fiftieth birthday. Pfeijffer can by now choose plenty of passages suitable for Saint Amour from his sizeable and much-awarded oeuvre; it is very likely that he will read from Peachez, een romance. It would be odd if Saint Amour were to skirt round the subject of #metoo, especially as the American author Kristen Roupenian will be with us. She will read from Cat Person, the short story with which – at a single blow – she became literally world famous when it was published in The New Yorker in December and went viral. It is about the short and clumsy romance between the 20-year-old Margot and the 34-year-old Robert and fits seamlessly with the spirit of our times – as mentioned above, with online dating and the hashtag ‘metoo’.
In addition to a cast that still has to be fully completed, all the familiar Saint Amour elements will be back: interludes, film extracts and humour.
