This production about Belgian’s colonial past has already been performed frequently in Brussels. The director Raven Ruëll cast off the historical yoke and set out to find Leopold II, ‘the man’. In the end he discovered a synthesis of the personal and the political in a production which, years after its creation, continues to be a marvellous festive occasion. The KVS will once again stage this work by Hugo Claus in parish halls in Genk, Bruges and Charleroi. However, and most importantly, the production will go on tour in Kinshasa, the capital of his great green Congo, where Leopold II never set foot.
“Terrifically well acted, smoothly narrated, and staged in a transparent, balanced and consistent fashion.” (De Morgen, 15.10.2002)
