After the successful Tornar (2015) and INVITED (2018), dancer and choreographer Seppe Baeyens continues his investigation into temporary forms of community. With Birds (2021), his upcoming creation, he ventures beyond the walls of the theatre and takes up residence in public space with a group of performers and musicians. The normal flow of life is interrupted, sometimes invisibly, at other times obviously. Through playful interactions with viewers, participants and serendipitous passers-by, unexpected compositions arise time and again, in which everyone influences the overarching creation.

Baeyens will be combining an open rehearsal of Birds on 17 October with a special edition of Atelier Quartier. He normally organises this open dance workshop from the Ultima Vez studio in Molenbeek. For this occasion, he brings the participants to KVS and involves them in the creative process.

Interaction with the audience is an important aspect of Seppe Baeyens' work. In the current circumstances, this will be done with respect of social distancing and corona proof as much as possible. However, we also count on the sense of responsibility of all participants.
Seppe Baeyens has been closely involved with the operations of Ultima Vez since 2011. The major performances he created and will be creating under the wings of the company in the past and coming years – Tornar (2015), INVITED (2018) and Birds (2021) – are thematically closely interlinked and are stepping stones in a wider artistic and social investigation. For Birds, the starting points are the same as in his earlier works: a diverse and intergenerational cast, participation, and co-authorship. This time, however, he goes one step further by seeking out the unpredictability of public space.
