He invites amongst others his own uncle Asghar: a classically trained Iranian actor who, as a septuagenarian, represents a very different zeitgeist to his young cousin who lives and works in Belgium. The production becomes a mirror of time – of evolution versus tradition in the arts, but also in life in general.
A in the role of B, when C didn’t make it exposes a hidden network of relations between the performers on stage. When the quartet tries to map out the historical and professional consequences of their interconnections, they uncover instead a deep-rooted disconnect. Through explorations of the Iranian theatre landscape these four men – a dancer, and actor, a writer and a director – share the stage. That stage appears to be the only thing somehow keeping them together, in spite of all the disconnects.
Given the current situation in Iran, the actors were only able to leave Tehran two weeks later than planned. This has caused delays in the production and has made it impossible for us to offer Dutch and French surtitles as was initially announced. A in the role of B when C didn’t make it will now be performed in English and Farsi, with surtitles in English only.
