From an early age, one thing connecting me to my father has been our endless curiosity for the unknown. We developed it, however in quite different ways: He is an astronomer. I am an artist. Long conversations about dark matter, entropy and the origin of the universe have taken place between us since I can recall. But there was always one scientific concept that I obsessively returned to in our conversations:

Horizon.

Horizon denotes the unknown. It doesn’t refer to the unknown in the sense of something that is not yet known, but rather to that which will never be known. Horizon is the boundary dividing what can be known and what will never be knowable.

It’s basically a concept that describes the border of human knowledge.

Just as the horizon, you may chase this border, but it will always move a bit further away, as if it were protecting something, making sure there is always an exceeding darkness out there beyond our grasp.

Fascinated with non-humanity/inhumanity, the inhumane? in my previous work, I have come to describe the non-human as simply that territory: that place that human knowledge can never access. That territory, that horizon, is not only out there at the end of our sight, it’s also in here, stretching into our body, our psyche, our biography and our history. For, what could be darker than our own self? What more unknown than my own father? And the grand-father of my father who came himself to the south through the horizon. From the vantage point of Europe, beyond the Horizon was the exotic unknown to be explored. From the perspective of the Americas, through the horizon entered the unknown in the form of strange demigods: half human, half horse, bringing God, the soul, the body, nature, and humanity; those strange concept-creations that were to be assimilated in order to barely survive death and exploitation.

In times of dramatic change and fear, biography and memory appear as my last resources for creation.

“The universe loses its memory too,” my father said. “When the universe expands faster than our horizon, things start getting lost in the dark.”

Horizon explores the connection of the unknown-out-there, and in the unknown-in- here. Based on my ongoing conversations with my father, this time I take the stage as a character, as my own subject of inquiry. Alongside my long-term collaborator Diego Noguera and four actors, I take the stage as a musician and a singer to explore the horizons of the knowable inside and outside humanity.
