The tradition of Georgian polyphony or multi-voice song – very different from Western polyphony – unites all Georgians. The renowned Georgian Basiani choir, a 12-strong male ensemble, visits Belgium for the first time during europalia georgia.

Belgian-Dutch vocalist and performer Timo Tembuyser creates Motherland with them, a staged concert set, with electronic music producer Tamo Nasidze.

“Motherland’ is a ritual space, exploring the presence of the mother through the powerful voices of the men of the Basiani choir. A live DJ, Tamo Nasidze, channels wisdoms of ancient and present-day women, blending them with the choir — singing both repertoire and improvisations. The dialogue creates a mesmerising soundtrack for the videos that take us on a journey across borders. The performance explores the space in between: the space between longing for and belonging to, the space between manmade borders and mother earth, the space between our bodies— a space we might call home.”
