Joachim Robbrecht
Joachim Robbrecht (1979) works as a playwright, director, and performer in the Netherlands and Belgium. In his work, he delves deeply into the historical and political layers that form the breeding ground of our contemporary mentality. Inspired by motifs and references from the cultural archive, he creates incisive performances that alternate between satirical and lyrical in tone.
As a writer and performer, he has collaborated with, among others, Het Zuidelijk Toneel (Tilburg, NL), NTGent (Ghent, BE), Toneelgroep Oostpool (Arnhem, NL), De Warme Winkel (Amsterdam, NL), Dood Paard (Amsterdam, NL), Julian Hetzel, and Sien Vanmaele. In addition, he mentors and supervises the learning trajectories of young artists at various institutions, including the Conservatory of Antwerp (Creative Writing), KASK Conservatory, and DAS Theatre Amsterdam (as tutor and advisor). He is also a member of the small editorial board of Etcetera, a journal for performing arts criticism.
For his work as a director, he received the Ton Lutz Prize and the Charlotte Köhler Prize. For his work as a writer, he received the Kaas & Kappes Prize and was nominated for the Taalunie Playwriting Prize. His performance The Great Warmachine, which specifically addressed the future of warfare, was an important motivation for inviting him to participate in this project.
