BĒTON
BAHAR TEMIZ / KVS
For her most recent creation, Bēton, performer Bahar Temiz examines our need to construct structures – both material and symbolic – that give meaning to existence. We build architectures to take refuge, to organize, to inhabit the world. Yet these very structures can isolate or even crush us.
From her multiple perspectives – as a woman, an artist, an immigrant, and a member of the Turkish diaspora – the image of being buried within one’s own constructions creates a bridge to the ongoing recovery from the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. How can our own constructions turn against us? And what if we are forced to leave everything we have built behind?
Bahar invites us to traverse a world that emerges from fluidity but can harden into a wall and crumble. Through every movement, Temiz investigates confinement, dependence, adaptability, and restlessness, revealing layer upon layer of the tension hidden beneath its smooth yet rigid surface.
The work unfolds as a reflection on solitude, possibility of connection and the search for meaning. The live soundtrack by Azertyklavierwerke intertwines with the ephemeral choreography, set design, and lighting by Pol Matthé – Temiz’s longtime collaborator on Zee, Ice, and Punkt.
Temiz balances vertical and horizontal, cyclical and linear, creating dance, text, and space on a perpetual threshold of transformation: structures that rise, strain, and – who knows – crumble.
