Closed Eyes
ALIDA DORS / THEATER ROTTERDAM
Do you truly dare to listen to yourself? To the inner voices telling you to run from what you don’t want to face, or calling you back to what truly matters? In Closed Eyes, Alida Dors invites you to shut out everyday distractions. Open your eyes and dare to dream.
A young man descends to the place where the call is audible to him: the depths of the Surinamese Brokopondo reservoir, once home to his ancestors. Through poetic dance, film imagery, uplifting live music, and powerful spoken word by Alida Dors herself, seven dancers and three musicians immerse you in a magical parallel universe. Closed Eyes is an invitation to let yourself be guided by your dreams, in a world suspended between past, present, and future.
For inspiration, Dors traveled with her team to Suriname. They filmed above Ganzee, her ancestral village, now submerged beneath the reservoir. “My ancestors dreamed for their grandchildren. I wanted to return to where those dreams were dreamed. Where they lived.”
After the performance, a post-show talk will take place with Alida Dors, moderated by KVS city dramaturg Gerardo Salinas. Everyone is welcome to join: in the KVS Atrium, from 9:30 PM to 10:00 PM.
“Closed Eyes has international allure” ★★★★★ de Volkskrant
“Choreographer Alida Dors, artistic director of Theater Rotterdam and recent Zomergasten guest, is also a gifted spoken word artist.” – ★★★ Trouw
“Closed Eyes is an important performance, offering hope in turbulent times.” – Theaterkrant
"Dors brings the human connection back to the stage, and that alone is reassuring. As theatre faces as uncertain a future as the beautiful dancers, musicians, and filmmakers who make this performance possible, we must cherish it dearly. A gentle revolution. Perhaps just in time." – Het Cultureel Persbureau
DJ set by Ramos Sama (9:15 PM > 12:00 AM)
In the mood for dancing after the performance? Then be sure to stay in the foyer, where DJ Ramos Sama will heat up the dance floor.
Ramos Sama is a lively, hyper-kinetic and hyper-rhythmic spirit whose mischievous sparkle reveals the joy he finds in everything he does. Dance is his medium, his language, but by no means his only outlet. As a creative powerhouse, he has been setting both national and international stages alight for many years, not only as a DJ but also as a dramaturg, theatre maker, coach in theatre and dance, and as an organiser or founding member of the Konichiwa Crew, which later evolved into the acclaimed collective Osei Bantu.
