De Meeting
JULIE CAFMEYER
In March 2024, Julie Cafmeyer published Life is but a dream, a story about power dynamics in the fictional theatre De Rotonde. This publication led, in real life, to the actual dismissal of a theatre director.
De Meeting is a follow-up to this publication. It stages a meeting that never took place. Between the theatre director, Julie, the lackey, the complaints office, and the chairman of the board. Items on the agenda: masculinity pacts, eroticism, toxic behaviour, love, burn-out, fiction, and avenging goddesses.
If everyone seemed hypnotised during the transgressive behaviour, this performance is about waking up. About the moment you resist, the moment you can finally say no. Where does this newfound clarity take us? Will we all wake up in the next dream?
"Writing the essay freed me, in the sense that I no longer feel blocked. I can now write a theatre piece that transcends my personal struggles and creates a situation in which I can explore the deeper motivations of the other characters. I’m ready to create complete chaos around the theme of transgressive behaviour — chaos that is funny, awkward, bold, cruel, moving and tender. Characters who strengthen each other, weaken, destabilise, question, help, take revenge, and love."
“[…] a performance with razor-sharp edges” – De Lage Landen
“Julie Cafmeyer has, on two occasions, deployed what she has at her unlimited disposal: imagination. Life is but a dream was a highly impactful form of fiction, De Meeting is that to an even greater extent. That Cafmeyer has managed to create this performance at all is undoubtedly her sweetest form of revenge. Not a lawsuit, but a work of art.” – Etcetera
