Waiting list

“Freedom is what you do with what has been done to you.”
- Jean-Paul Sartre

After SOCRATES, MARX, and SPINOZA, philosopher and theatre creator Stefaan van Brabandt presents the fourth instalment in his theatre series on great philosophers. Not a monologue this time, but a dialogue between the most famous couple in the history of philosophy. Frank Focketyn and Sien Eggers play Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir.

What relevance does their philosophy hold today? Is the feminist struggle championed by de Beauvoir still as pertinent as ever? And what does she mean by her ethics of ambiguity?

What does it mean to be an authentic human being? Why are we “condemned to be free”? And why, according to Sartre, is hell other people?

In SARTRE & DE BEAUVOIR, the cult figures of French existentialism look back on their lives and their schools of thought – as well as on their turbulent romantic relationship.
