Yo, Chacarera is a performing arts research and creation project that uses Chacarera as a critical device to question how a territory's cultural identity is constructed and what role migrants play in that construction.

Chacarera, a traditional Argentine dance and rhythm, emerged in a colonial context as a result of the forced coexistence of Spanish culture imposed by colonizers, Indigenous peoples of Abya Yala, and enslaved African people. I, a brown migrant woman, am the result of that fusion and I dance memory, diaspora and survival.

From my body situated in contemporary Barcelona, the research traces the genealogy of Chacarera to understand that what we call tradition within a territory is rooted in multiple identities. By deconstructing its forms, including zapateo, the voice as an affective archive, and earth as the sole scenographic element, the piece explores the migrant body's search to build spaces of identity affirmation in an unfamiliar territory.

Grounded in Indigenous Futurism and decolonial thought, Yo, Chacarera conceives temporality as circular, where the colonial past and the present intersect. Chacarera operates as a prism to reveal invisible hybridizations, class tensions and affective geographies shaping the urban space we inhabit daily. It is a space of sovereignty where the body reclaims itself as a refuge, a utopia and a living territory.
