In La Gioia – ‘Joy’ – Pippo Delbono wants to remind us of the fragile and fleeting nature of happiness. With a frantic lust for life, he encourages us to overcome fear and transience.

The stage is doused with springtime joy by Thierry Boutemy’s flower arrangements, flowing down like a dreamy waterfall. Happiness blossoms in the serene approach to finitude, in songs, dance and music, and in madness ... But also in the powerful love that connects Delbono with his actors, who seem to have escaped from a fairy tale.

'One follows Joy with a choking heart, expecting the upheavals and the iconic, musical upsettings that Delbono’s theatre is capable of, and ends up facing a languid, melancholic, intimate ritual instead.'
