THE WEIGHT OF A WOMAN
Lisette Ma Neza / KVS
Thirty years after the genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda, Lisette Ma Neza reflects on violence and its effects on someone’s life and heart.
Lisette Ma Neza hardly needs an introduction. Filmmaker, slam poet, Brussels’ first city poet, … in short, a Jack of many trades, but first and foremost an artist. Last year, The Weight of a Woman had its Belgian premiere at KVS. The sheer size of the waiting list told us loud and clear: we need to bring this creation back in 2025.
The Weight of a Woman is a poem full of questions. Through words, songs, imagery, and dance, she wonders how much value a life still has after violence at a personal or mass scale? Whose lives are worth saving, whose lives seem to have less value? How do we continue to live? How do we forgive each other and ourselves? As a woman and as a human, these are heartfelt questions she wishes to ask her grandmothers. The poem serves as an attempt to pass these questions and answers on to her younger sisters.
On Thursday, November 13, a post-show talk with Lisette Ma Neza will take place after the performance, at 9:45 p.m. in the KVS BOX. Everyone is warmly welcome.
“The Weight of a Woman is an urgent, red-hot creation that will no doubt keep growing and burning.” – Etcetera
